The advent of shopping
malls had a devastating effect on the shopping districts of small towns,
leading to vacant store fronts and empty sidewalks. But also lost was the personal shopping and dining experience.
Even though malls have park
benches, potted trees and maybe even a gazebo, they cannot recreate the feel of
small town retailing. Some shoppers have
become “malled-out,” and so, new retail developers have “un-malled” stores and
actually designed outdoor shopping centers with small town streetscapes.
Now shoppers can walk
outside from store to store on new sidewalks and small streets where once, was
open land. But even in these replicated
small towns, there remains something missing from the small town shopping and
dining experience.
